FAQ

  • Where does your information come from?

The club, shop, event and visitor attraction listings are compiled from a variety of sources, including:

    • Data submitted to ModelR through the add information page.
    • Promotional material published by the organisation or event organiser, including club websites, show posters/flyers and press releases.
    • Media reports in modelling and general publications.
    • Information distributed via online discussion forums, including Usenet posts and web forum threads.
As far as possible, all event information is checked before being made live on the site. However, ModelR cannot guarantee that any listed event will actually take place as shown, so it's always a good idea to check for yourself before making any lengthy journey!

The product pages are based on the various supplier catalogues. Auction listings (eBay) and bookshop data (Amazon) come from their affiliate schemes. News comes from press releases and Google News. Website listings are primarily from DMOZ but enhanced with data aded manually. Articles, gallery photos and the ModelR blog are original to the site's contributors unless otherwise stated.

  • Where do the website screenshots come from?

Where possible, they're retrieved automatically from the Open Thumbshots Project. If Open Thumbshots doesn't have them, then they're generated manually using WebShot and uploaded to the server.

  • Why isn't [whatever] club/shop/exhibition listed?

Because no-one has told us about it, and it hasn't been published anywhere else! We can only include information that we know about, and we don't know everything (yet!).

  • Can I add or update a listing for a club/shop/exhibition that I know about, even if I'm not directly associated with it?

Yes, although we prefer to get information from the organisation concerned as far as possible. If you're not associated with the organisation, then you must include the organisation's or event's website address in your submission, so that we can verify the details against that before publishing them. For organisations that do not have a website, we can only accept submissions directly from someone with authority to speak on behalf of the organisation.

  • Can I use your listings on my website?

Yes, provided you do so under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share Alike 2.0 UK: England & Wales Licence. You'll need to read the page at the other end of that link to get the full details of what that implies, but the summary of it is that you can re-use the material presented here provided that you don't use it for commercial purposes (ie, you don't try to sell it or charge for access to it), and you re-publish it under the same licence as this one (ie, you have to allow people to re-use it from your website as well).

The only explicit exceptions to this are the auction listings and bookshop pages. These are published on this site under the terms of the affiliate schemes which provide the data, and it would be a breach of the scheme conditions to allow other sites to use them. In any case, if you want something like that on your site then you'd want your own affiliate scheme so that you get the money from it instead of us! Also, the product data and press releases are not original to this site and hence are not covered by this site's copyright. You are welcome to take product and news data from ModelR if you want to, but you should credit it to the original source rather than us if you do.

  • Do you have an RSS feed of the data?

Not yet. That's planned as a future enhancement, time permitting. A regularly updated csv file (for those who like to do their own programming) and Javascript-based listings (for those who don't!) are also in the pipeline, but probably not in the immediate future.

  • How does ModelR make money?

From Google Adsense adverts on the site, and from affiliate earnings on product sales from ebay, Amazon and OnTracks. Here are some links if you want to set up similar schemes:
