The A4s were the zenith of Sir Nigel Gresley's design career. Following the progressive development of the A1 and A3 classes the LNER CME married the high pressure boiler, long travel valves and streamlined steam passages with a supberb streamlined body to produce what many would argue is the finest British locomotive design. Immediately launched into service on the "Coronation" service these East Coast thoroughbreds quickly proved reliable and capable of sustained high speed running. The class claimed successive UK speed records over 100mph, culminating in "Mallard's" steam world record of 126mph in 1938.

Gradually displaced from top link duties with the coming of diesels, the class had a brief Indian Summer of glory working Glasgow to Aberdeen services. Half a dozen lasted long enough to be preserved and three will be running on the main line within a year.
