Vendor Description (OnTracks)Rebuilt Battle of Britain class No. 34088 "213 Squadron" in late BR lined green livery.

During WW2 Oliver Bulleid was granted permission to construct a class of mixed traffic engines to help ease the Southern Railway's shortage of motive power. What emerged broke the mould of accepted steam locomotive practice, two classes of "air-smoothed" pacifics with Boxpok wheels, chain driven valve gear and welded boilers incorporating thermic syphons. The Merchant Vavy calss were the first to be introduced, followed by the slightly smaller and lighter West Country and Battle of Britain versions. Although they proved powerful and free steaming, problems with the valve gear persuaded British Railways to rebuild them in more conventional form in the late 1950s - all the Merchant Navies and many WCs and BoBs were so dealt with. In the late 1960s these locos were some of the last on BR to routinely record 100mph running and had a glorious Indian Summer before being withdrawn. Examples of all types have survived into preservation.
